I don’t know how it happened, but one day LadyBug woke up obsessed with ponies. I was mystified, but of all of the many things she could have fallen in love with, ponies seem like a harmless enough hobby. The only problem is that she also loves dress-up and while some of her ponies have cute accessories, they aren’t really designed for fashion. Apparently we’re not the only household with that conundrum because the brilliant folks behind Pony Royale have managed to address both the pony and the fashion obsessions so common in young girls.
We received two Pony Royale ponies named Misty and Diamond. Each one has a birth stone based on their birth month and diamond just happens to be my birth stone. Ahem. Each pony has a detachable mane, tail, saddle blanket/saddle decoration, and head and tail decorations. Some of them, like Diamond, also have an ankle decoration. They also come with a little brush for grooming their hair and an extra mane/tail for swapping.
What’s cool about Pony Royale is that you can mix and match all of the elements. They can swap manes or tails, saddles or anything else. The pieces easily snap/slide in and out of place and even younger kids will be able to do it alone once they know how it works. Each one comes with two manes/tails, so you can buy just one pony and still be able to customize. Still, it’s more fun with two! The ponies have articulated heads which can be posed. For girls who are outgrowing My Little Pony sets, this is a nice next step. They look more like real horses and feel like an older toy. You won’t find many accessories yet as the product is still new, but I’d expect to see some fashion sets come on the market in the near future.
My one (little) complaint is that all of the ponies are princesses. I’m a big believer in toys that allow boys and girls to play together, even if they’re playing in different ways. Bug got a pony of his own, but he was a bit sad that it was a girl. He got over it since he didn’t have any choice, but I’d love to see some prince ponies, too. I did mention this to one of the women behind the ponies and she just smiled at me in the way people do when they’re humoring you. “They’re princesses,” she explained. Don’t hold your breath for any prince ponies any time soon, folks.
Pony Royale sets retail for $14.99, but can be found for less. In other words? They’re priced just right for birthday party gifts, which is good news as LadyBug starts Kindergarten this year and we’ll no doubt be seeing a lot of parties in our future.

My favorite part of Pony Royale was the neat playset that looked kind of like a gazebo that stored all of the ponies accessories! Saw these at Toy Fair and they were pretty neat!
