It’s hard to believe that Sesame Street is celebrating 40 years of educational programming for kids. Then again, it was a staple when I was young and continues to be so to today. I was so thrilled when I was asked about reviewing the Sesame Street anniversary DVD, Sesame Street: 40 Years of Sunny Days. I thought it would be a great way to introduce my kids to my favorite Sesame Street clips. Little did I know that I’d enjoying watching it just as much as they would.
This special boxed set includes two DVDs and a small, hardcover book. The DVDs are full of wonderful Sesame Street memories, from favorite segments to behind the scenes footage to pop-up facts about the show. I most enjoyed watching the “Muppeteers” control their puppets, while reading their lines in character. The talent on that set is certainly impressive.
What touched me most was watching Jim Henson as the voice of Ernie doing a scene with his counterpart Frank Oz as the voice of Bert. Henson and Oz revolutionized not only the world of puppets, but educational entertainment for kids. I have to also give a nod to Caroll Spinney who has been performing as both Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch (hello, split personality?) for the past 40 years. Wow!
If you’re a fan of the ‘Street, this is a must-have collection. I suspect it will be on quite a few holiday wish lists this year…
