Local Quirky Good–Boston Non-Profits in the Spotlight

If you’ve been reading Quirky Fusion for any length of time, you probably know that service is an important ethic to me. I believe in giving back to your community in whatever ways you can. In my past life (pre-kids!), I did a lot of volunteer work and I also worked with several non-profits. It’s not the kind of thing that’s going to make you wealthy, but there’s something to be said for having a job that you’re passionate about and that makes a difference. With kids and a job that has no set hours, I’m  not really getting in a lot of volunteer time and I miss it. Fortunately, I’ve been able to help out in other ways: promoting causes I believe in via social media, supporting parents of kids with recently diagnosed food allergies, and doing a bit of pro bono work here and there.

Recently, Weber Shandwick invited me to their Philanthropy Day here in Boston as a media representative. The goal is to help small non-profits find the best ways to shine light on their organizations and get their stories out. I spoke on a panel about pitching stories to the media, and was able to talk a bit about working with bloggers. I hope I was able to get across some unique ideas for catching blogger eyes and creating mutually beneficial relationships.

The experience also inspired me. I remember what it’s like to try to get attention for a mission that you feel so passionately about, you can’t understand why people don’t flock to help. I offered to profile the organizations on Quirky Fusion and try to raise some visibility for their causes. I heard back from 9 of the participants and so will be profiling each of them and linking to the profiles below. I’ve also got something exciting up my sleeve, but I’m not going to share that just yet.
