Here are my notes from the PR and Marketing 101 Session at Blissdom. Please feel free to ask if you need examples/clarification on any of the points.
Why pay attention to your writing skills?
- Your writing reflects on you, whether you want it to or not
- Once it’s out there, you can’t take it back
- You may want to pursue avenues beyond or in addition to blogging
- Paying attention to what you write can make you a better writer
Check your spelling AND your facts:
- You’ve heard it before: spell check your work
- Proofread, proofread, proofread
- Ask a friend or two to watch for typos
- Double-check any facts in your post
- Make sure to attribute quotes, ideas, photos, drawings, etc., to the appropriate source
Making enemies and burning bridges:
- Be careful with “snarky” humor
- Avoid unnecessary disparaging remarks, especially about sponsors and contacts
- Don’t “call people out” just to make a point
- Once again, your writing reflects on you and will continue to do so
