Blissdom: PR and Marketing 101 – Professional Writing

Here are my notes from the PR and Marketing 101 Session at Blissdom. Please feel free to ask if you need examples/clarification on any of the points.

Why pay attention to your writing skills?
  • Your writing reflects on you, whether you want it to or not
  • Once it’s out there, you can’t take it back
  • You may want to pursue avenues beyond or in addition to blogging
  • Paying attention to what you write can make you a better writer

Check your spelling AND your facts:

  • You’ve heard it before: spell check your work
  • Proofread, proofread, proofread
  • Ask a friend or two to watch for typos
  • Double-check any facts in your post
  • Make sure to attribute quotes, ideas, photos, drawings, etc., to the appropriate source

Making enemies and burning bridges:

  • Be careful with “snarky” humor
  • Avoid unnecessary disparaging remarks, especially about sponsors and contacts
  • Don’t “call people out” just to make a point
  • Once again, your writing reflects on you and will continue to do so
