Celebrate Youth Peacemakers with a $50K Prize

I believe in young people. I believe that, given the support and resources, they will rise to the occasion and do amazing things. It’s why I have my Master’s degree in education. It’s why, despite plenty of more lucrative career possibilities, I chose to work with kids and kid-supporting organizations. It’s why I now provide support for parents in making wonderful choices for their kids. One of the organizations that I used to work with and that I now whole-heartedly support is Peace First. They work with young people to give them the tools and confidence to be peacemakers in their own lives. They learn about empathy, they learn about de-escalating conflict, they learn to work together more effectively. If you know a young person who lives those qualities and is working toward a more peaceful society, you can nominate him or her for a $50K Peace First fellowship to further their education or their peacemaking goals.

Peace First is looking for kids in the United States between the ages of 8 and 22 who are working in their own neighborhoods toward a more just and peaceful community. The winners and their projects will exemplify compassion, courage, and the art of collaboration. Peace First Fellows serve for two years. In addition to the financial prize, they will receive mentoring and training. They’ll also have the time to connect with and learn from each other.

You can nominate an amazing young person yourself, or encourage them to apply. Remember that kids under the age of 18 should have permission from a parent and kids under the age of 13 will need to use a parent’s email address to apply. The deadline to apply/nominate is April 12, 2013. There is a lot of info on the Peace First Prize site, so please take a moment to review the details.
