If you think back to your early childhood education experiences, you may remember using a felt board. As simple as they are, there is something magical about the way pieces stick to the felt. The boards were creative experiences, giving each child an opportunity for self-expression. Software Smoothie set out to recreate that experience in app form and they’ve done a fairly accurate job in Felt Pad.
Felt Pad is an open-ended play app. Kids choose a “felt” background from a wide range of options. They can start with a bed room, a lake scene, a forest or a pirate ship. With 25+ setting choices, kids can create elaborate stories. Felt people come in multiple colors, including blue, and there are plenty of hair styles, clothes, shoes, and other accessories. There are even a few special outfits, like a police officer and Santa Claus. A glue bottle allows kids to pin the face, hair, and clothes onto their people so they can easily be moved around the scene.
People aren’t the only objects available for play. There are animals, trees, buildings, and a variety of props. Each of the objects can be scaled by pinching. You can also add letters and numbers. The app has a snapshot feature, so kids can create entire stories with text and pictures to bring together into a little book. When you’re done, shake the iPad and start from scratch.
I love this little app. Your kids don’t always need an obviously “educational” experience. Felt Pad gives you a portable felt activity that kids can enjoy at home or on the road. It can be used as part of a larger activity (create an a scene from a book or an alternate ending), or just as a means of creative expression. It’s not the most glitzy app, but it holds true to its namesake.
