A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of hearing Joss Whedon speak at Harvard. Aside from being a brilliant writer (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Serenity/Firefly and Dollhouse), Joss is a passionate advocate for human equality and, in particular, for the rights of women. What is even more impressive is that Joss walks the walk. His TV shows highlight women who are strong, but who retain their femininity. They are vulnerable, passionate, caring, generous, angry, frightened and flawed. And, of course, I was impressed when he said that his kids have his wife’s last name (read why). For all the “progress” women have made, it is still socially inappropriate for kids to have their mother’s last name!
Anyway, I wanted to share an older video of Joss speaking to Equality Now. I found his last comment particularly profound.
