I have recently been asked to take part in a compensated campaign to learn more about the new Microsoft Stores that are popping up around the country and what I have learned has surprised me. Yes, you can buy Microsoft products in the stores, and yes, you can get tech support on any of your Microsoft products. But they offer a lot more… and one of their offerings is going to excite those of you with budding writers, movie makers, video game developers and photographers between the ages of 8 and 13.
Throughout the summer, Microsoft stores will be offering FREE summer camps for kids. They can learn about all the steps that go into making movies, develop apps and/or video games, write multi-media “stories,” and work on their photography and graphic design skills. Sessions run for two hours a day for five days. Given that these are free, I’d recommend signing up as early as possible. If your local store doesn’t have camps listed yet, give them a call.
A parent or caregiver must remain in the store with their child (what a great chance to build some skills of your own and bond with your kid!), so do plan ahead for that.
I’ll be sharing more, but the stores also offer free workshops for adults, as well as those for young kids, homeschooling groups, and Girl Scouts. You can even call and plan a special workshop for your own community group. They also have small spaces that can be used for community events and birthday parties with a giant TV and Xbox with Kinect. Free.
