The HP TopShot LaserJet M275 is an all-in-one printer, scanner, fax combo with a unique twist. Unlike other scanners, it has no cover on the bed, allowing you to place 3D items on top for scanning. A raised arm provides lighting and takes multiple images, allowing the printer to create pictures that have more depth than traditionally scanned items. These aren’t 3D in the sense that the images pop out at you, but they are able to capture more of them item than your flatbed scanner normally would.
Here’s a quick over view of the LaserJet Pro M275:
- Quick and easy scanning of 3D Objects
- ePrint for easy wireless printing from anywhere with Internet access
- AirPrint capabilities for wireless printing from iOS devices
- Beautiful color prints
- No traditional feeder for multi-documents
- No memory card slots
This all-in-one is a funny animal. It’s best suited for people who frequently need to capture images physical items, but don’t want to try to use a camera to do so. The white background does make it very easy to pop things onto eBay or a website and it’s quick and easy to use. On the other hand, it is not ideal for people who have more traditional scanning needs. Without a feeder, scanning multi-page documents is tedious at best, and the lack of a cover (and the the way it captures images) may make for lower quality scans of paper with any wrinkles. You’ll run into the same issues for faxing documents. The printer works as you’d expect, but definitely shines in color prints.
I could see this as a great tool for artists who work with mixed media, crafters, and anyone else who deals in smaller objects. Collectors might also use this to catalog their collections. Still, you can see that this is somewhat of a niche product.
