I made the mistake of leaving my box of Skeeter Snacks (sent to us for review purposes) in a box on the counter. While I wasn’t looking, the kids stole and ate almost all of the samples. This says more than the most eloquent review I could write. First of all, the kids remembered past experiences with Skeeter Snacks and couldn’t wait to get into the cookies. Second, Bug, who is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts, could easily recognize that the cookies were safe for him to eat. Needless to say, I wasn’t too happy with them, but this is an occupational hazard for mom bloggers!
For the uninitiated, Skeeter Snacks makes peanut and tree nut-free cookies that taste just as good as (if not better than) other prepackaged cookies. They are passionate about this, as evidenced in their detailed “Nut Free Protocol” page on their website. Their regular cookies are packaged in batches of two (one serving size, thank you very much) and come in the following flavors: Skeeter Doodle, Golden Oatmeal, Chocolate Chunk, and Chocolate Cubed. I was looking forward to trying at least a bite of the Chocolate Cubed cookies, but my kids didn’t leave a trace!
Skeeter has just released two new snacks: Chocolate Chip Minis and Cinnamon Grahams. They come in larger (10 oz) packages. What I love about these two varieties is that they are made from whole grains with no trans fat and no high fructose corn syrup. They are made from all-natural ingredients and it is refreshing to see an ingredient list that looks like this (Cinnamon Grahams):
Ingredients: Whole Wheat Flour, Wheat Flour, Sugar, Canola Oil, Cinnamon, Molasses, Natural Flavor, Lecithin, Sodium Bicarbonate (leavening), Salt. Contains: Wheat, Soy, Milk
The Grahams are crispy and full of cinnamon taste. And I was surprised to find that the Minis are chocolately as many mini chocolate chip cookies are lacking in flavor. Mmm.
Skeeter Snacks are available with your regular groceries. Stores nearest to me include Hannaford, Market Basket, and Shoprite. I know people have purchased them at Costco as well. And, despite the giant “NUT FREE” label on the box, these aren’t just for families coping with nut allergies. You’re not making any compromises by the absence of nuts. So (Skeeter) snack on! I might just save the Minis and Grahams for myself…
